A Place of Greater Safety
1789: as Revolution sweeps through France, three obscure young men step into the harsh light of history. This epic of the French Revolution follows three friends, all naive and ambitious, as they make their way through the revolution and come to shape its most destructive elements. Camille Desmoullins, a journalist who will unwittingly begin the riot that leads to the storming of the Bastille. Georges D’Anton, who hates politics but will lead the Gridirons in their opposition to the King, and Robespierre, terrified of violence, but who will personally send thousands to the guillotine. This is a huge novel, but it’s worth every page. You can practically smell the stink of the Paris streets and hear the rusty swish of the guillotine.
