Lord of the Flies
Undoubtedly one of the most influential novels of the twentieth century, William Golding’s 1954 masterpice Lord of the Flies has endured for generations, shocking and thrilling in equal measure. Following a plane crash on a desert island, a group of British school boys wait for their rescue party to arrive. By day, they learn to naviagte the tropical paradise they find themselves stranded in. By night, however, their dreams are haunted by the image of a mysterious and terrifying beast. As the boys trust in each other breaks down, something primitive and violent stirs in them, and their behaviour takes on a savage and terrifying significance.
Lord of the Flies is widely considered to be Golding’s greatest work. It was a huge factor in his being awarded the Nobel Prize for literature in 1983. Though primarily read nowadays as a school text, this classic tale of human nature pushed to its limits deserves to be read by everyone. It was made into a feature film directed by Harry Hook in 1990.
