The Bell Jar Art Print (Diane Dear – Artist)
The Bell Jar is the only novel written by poet Sylvia Plath. Highly autobiographical, it was originally published under Plath’s pseudonym “Victoria Lucas”. It chronicles the life and mental health of Esther Greenwood, a Boston native who takes up a writing job in New York. Esther finds it difficult to acheive satisfaction or happiness from her life. The decline of her mental health closely mirrored that of the author herself. Plath tragically took her own life just one month after the book’s publication. Years later, The Bell Jar remains the most beautifully and tragically written exploration of a mental breakdown ever to appear in a written work. The spiral patterns employed by the artist in this print represent Esther’s “spiral” into mental illness.
