Homage to Catalonia

‘Every line of serious work that I have written since 1936 has been written, directly or indirectly, against totalitarianism and for democratic Socialism as I understand it’. Thus wrote Orwell following his experiences as a militiaman in the Spanish Civil War, chronicled in Homage to Catalonia. Here he brings to bear all the force of his humanity, passion and clarity, describing with bitter intensity the bright hopes and cynical betrayals of that chaotic episode: the revolutionary euphoria of Barcelona, the courage of ordinary Spanish men and women he fought alongside, the terror and confusion of the front, his near-fatal bullet wound and the vicious treachery of his supposed allies.

A firsthand account of the brutal conditions of the Spanish Civil War, George Orwell’s Homage to Catalonia includes an introduction by Julian Symons in Penguin Modern Classics.

About the Author

George Orwell was one of the most important writers of teh twentieth century. Most famous for writing 1984, as well as his dark fable of power Animal Farm, Orwell had been a journalist for decades before the publication of his two most famous works. His first published work, Down and Out in Paris and London, exposed the levels of urban poverty that pervaded the two most (supposedly) advanced cities in Europe and scandalised readers with their depiction of life between the cracks of society.

Having written articles and for many years warning against the danger of rising fascism in Europe, Orwell risked his own life by heading to Spain in 1936 to fight on the Republican side during the Spanish Civil War. His experiences there eventually led to the publication of Homage to Catalonia. This wonderful book contains much of the original thinking that would go into Animal Farm and 1984, from the corrupting influence of power and the concept of doublethink.

Orwell died in London in 1950. His works have become a byword for watchfulness against the abuse of power and political language, and are studied by people fo all ages in schools and universities.
